Potential bad news for people over 50 who are taking calcium supplement or consuming calcium foods like dairy. A recent study printed in the British Medical Journal found that extra calcium does little to support stronger bones. Instead, it may actually cause heart problems as the extra calcium can potentially build up in the arteries. As calcium builds up, the risk for a heart attack or other serious problem increases. Doctors may need to start rethinking recommending extra dairy like milk / cottage cheese or supplementation because it may do more harm than good. There was minor evidence of stronger bones for people who ate the most dairy, but not enough to prevent brittle bones that break.
Dairy does not necessarily work, but strengthening the bones through exercise may be a solution. Any sort of physical activity both cardio and weight training is said to be beneficial to bone health. Also, a healthy diet and avoiding guilty pleasures can go along for bone and overall good health.
